Heartbreak Ridge: A Hidden Gem in the San Bernardino Mountains

Words by Brad Kowitz

Looking for an off-road adventure that delivers technical challenges, breathtaking views, and peaceful solitude? Meet Heartbreak Ridge — a lesser-known trail east of Big Bear, California that packs everything you'd want in a day of wheeling. While it may not sport a Jeep Badge of Honor, this hidden treasure in the San Bernardino Mountains offers an authentic off-road experience away from the crowds.

Trail Details

  • Location: Off Highway 38, near Angelus Oaks
  • Difficulty: 6/10 (Intermediate)
  • Vehicle Requirements: High clearance 4x4 with good articulation
  • Trail Length: 4 miles out and back
  • Elevation: 7600 ft

Finding the Trailhead

The journey begins off Highway 38 near Angelus Oaks. Pro tip: Download your maps beforehand — cell service is spotty in this remote area. The trailhead is well-marked, but having GPS coordinates handy will save you time and uncertainty.

The Off-Road Experience

Heartbreak Ridge wastes no time testing your rig and skills. Right from the start, you're greeted with a rocky ascent that sets the tone for what's ahead. This is your cue to air down and prepare for a proper wheeling session.

The trail serves up a diverse menu of obstacles:

  • Challenging rock ledges that demand precise tire placement
  • Loose sandy sections that test your momentum management
  • Steep climbs that showcase your rig's articulation
  • Technical descents that put your spotting skills to work

On our recent run, I had Doc (my 2023 Gladiator) out front, putting its recent upgrades to the test. My wife followed in her Wrangler, tackling Heartbreak Ridge for the first time — nothing beats seeing a familiar trail through fresh eyes.

Nature's Showcase

What sets Heartbreak Ridge apart is how it balances technical driving with natural beauty. The trail winds through dense pine forests, offering stunning vistas of the San Bernardino range. Spring and summer visitors are treated to displays of wildflowers, while the distinctive red-barked manzanita bushes add character year-round.

Wildlife enthusiasts, keep your cameras ready. We spotted red-tailed hawks riding thermals overhead and Douglas squirrels darting between the Jeffrey pines. While black bears call this area home, they generally keep their distance — but staying alert is always wise in backcountry territory.

Why Choose Heartbreak Ridge?

This trail hits the sweet spot for several reasons:

  • Technical enough to be engaging, but not overwhelming
  • Lighter traffic than popular Badge of Honor trails
  • Diverse terrain that builds well-rounded wheeling skills
  • Stunning photography opportunities
  • Perfect training ground for intermediate off-roaders

Trail Tips

  • Air down before the first obstacle
  • Pack recovery gear — better safe than sorry
  • Bring plenty of water and snacks
  • Download offline maps
  • Consider running with a buddy vehicle
  • Plan for 2 hours to complete the trail
